If you didn't know anything about farming rice paddies before ... well, you probably still won't after this game. I mean, it's not a teaching tool. BUT it sure is fun! With only 18 double-sided cards, players take on the role of Cambodian farmers expanding their rice paddies to produce bountiful harvests. While light, quick, and simple, this wallet-sized game packs a punch with variety and strategy. Let's take a look! What Is It? A drafting game with variable player powers (like that to your right) where players try to create closed rice paddies in their personal landscapes stocked with houses, buffaloes, and farmers, to score the most points! The bigger the paddy, the bigger the score, so players must choose their cards wisely to rake in the points! Who Is It For? I'd say it's simple enough that anyone ages 8+ could easily enjoy it. Fans of drafting and/or tile placement games (yes, I know they're cards, but you know what I mean!) as well as those who like/are good at puzzle-y or spacial recognition games will likely also enjoy this. I think it will be able to easily extend to a large range of gamers. Quality of Components I do have a prototype version, so I can only assume components may not be 100% final, but what I have is solid. The cards are you average quality, and the little wallet is standard for Button Shy - everything fits nicely and it seems very solid. My rules are just a print out, but everything is detailed and laid out nicely so they're easy to follow. The ancestor sides of the cards (with the player powers) are also laid out clearly, overall. However, there are numbers on both sides of the ancestors that look like they are for scoring, but the game didn't come with cubes or anything else to use to keep track of scores (so I just put some with it) and I'm not sure if the final version will. PROS
CONS
Difficulty I'd probably give this game a 2.5 out of 5 for difficulty. It's pretty easy to learn and play overall, but there is still some light strategy and planning involved to close paddies and get maximum points, so that elevates it. Final Thoughts For a small game, Seasons of Rice leaves a pretty big impression! And honestly, that isn't surprising to me, as Button Shy's wallet games more often than not strike me as excellent. There's not very much to this one, just draft a card, place it in your landscape, repeat, and score, but it is a smooth and entertaining play from start to finish and a lot of fun! I definitely recommend it!
