Howdy solo gamers! Glad to have you here for this post! If you've followed much of what I've written about in the part, you probably know I'm not a huge solo gamer. Partly because I live with my forever gaming partner, and since we work a very similar schedule and have very similar tastes, we usually play together, and partly because I'm very lazy and do not like to take the time to set up a game by myself and for only myself. However, a whole bunch of the games that I own do have solo modes, so over the past few weeks, I've been trying some more of them out to see which ones I like best, and these solo modes hit the top of the charts! Plus, I haven't done a list in quite some time, so I thought this would be a great one! If you're like me and haven't really been able to get super into solo gaming in general, for whatever reasons, I think this list is a good place to start because the games generally don't have heavy rules, and they have pretty light or easy set up and clean up. The list also features various mechanics, because I've found that these are my favorites that do solo for their "thing" (i.e. roll & write, deck builder, etc.) Moreover, I lean toward solo games that have an objective you're trying to reach (i.e. score X points within X rounds) or compare your score to a scale (to earn you a title) rather than just "record your score and try to do better next time!" So if you're interested in trying some games on your own, check these out, because they're some of my favorites! Happy Gaming~ 5. Flip CityTheme - City Building Mechanics - Deck Building; Tableau Building/Management; Push Your Luck Why It's Great - It's very similar to the multi-player game, which I already liked, but it adds a bit more tension because you need to reach the win condition before the card supply runs out, and it depletes the more you shuffle your deck. While in the multi-player game, I'm all about cycling my deck a lot to get better combos of cards out in my tableau at once, this made me strategize more and be more cautious, which I really liked. It had a great flow, and was really easy to play. My Personal Solo Rating - 7/10 MSRP - $19.95 BGG Website 4. Sprawlopolis Theme - City Building (In a more literal sense than the last entry) Mechanics - Tile Placement; Puzzle; Area Influence (Sort of...) Why It's Great - As a co-op game, it falls a little flat for me, because it just feels like I could be more efficient playing my myself .... and I am! I really enjoy the variable scoring objectives game to game because it forces you to change your strategy and adapt to the different needs of the city you're building. Additionally, I like that it is easy to take anywhere and doesn't take up a ton of space while playing. It's a lot of fun if you enjoy puzzley type games as well as "tile" laying games. My Personal Solo Rating - 8/10 MSRP - $12.00 - $15.00 (varies by version. Also a $3.00 Print and Play available!) My Review BGG Website 3. Tavern Masters Theme - Fantasy/Bartending Mechanics - Hand Management; Tableau Building Why It's Great - I like the possibilities for combos in this game a lot. You can get some great chains of cards going and wind up with lots of cards in your tableau if you play the cards just right, which is always cool to me. Everything about the game is also really thematic and world-building which is awesome so that even if you're playing alone you can really get into it! My Personal Solo Rating - 8/10 MSRP - $39.99 My Review BGG Website 2. SagradaTheme - Stained Glass Window Crafting Mechanics - Dice Rolling; Pattern Building; Set Collection Why It's Great - If you like the multi-player version of Sagrada, you'll probably enjoy this too! The rules are quite similar so it is a very easy transition, and even if you aren't familiar with the game otherwise, it's an easy to learn solo! You have to puzzle your way out of it because you want to place as many higher numbered dice as possible so that the game scores lower and is easier to beat - but with placement rules, you can't always place all the high rolls, so it is quite the challenge. You can also have more or less tool cards available to change the difficulty, which is neat so you can make it more challenging as you get used to it. My Personal Solo Rating - 9/10 MSRP - $39.95 BGG Website 1. Cartographers Theme - Fantasy; Map Making (ergo, cartography) Mechanics - Flip & Write Why It's Great - This solo mode is such a neat challenge and the scores you need to beat (based on the objective cards available) scales really well with what you're working toward. I love the way that the monsters come out because it doesn't allow for players to try and take it easy on themselves, but can also sometimes work out and fill in spaces nicely. The game plays really smoothly in solo and feels a little puzzley because you need to score pretty high in order to beat the game. My Personal Solo Rating - 9/10 MSRP - $24.95 My Review BGG Website
